Im November 2002 nahm das BfR seine Arbeit als neu-
es Institut im Geschäftsbereich des Bundesministe-
riums für Ernährung, Landwirtschaft und Verbraucher-
schutz in Berlin auf. Zusammen mit dem ebenfalls neu
gegründeten Bundesamt für Verbraucherschutz und
Lebensmittelsicherheit war es die Antwort der Bun-
desregierung auf das Vorhaben der Europäischen
Kommission, den gesundheitlichen Verbraucherschutz
infolge mehrerer Lebensmittelkrisen in Europa neu zu
strukturieren. Im Jahr 2012 feierte das BfR sein zehnjäh-
riges Bestehen. Es kann auf mehrere Tausend wissen-
schaftliche Stellungnahmen zu Themen der Lebensmit-
tel-, Chemikalien- und Produktsicherheit zurückblicken,
die in Politik, Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft, bei Medien und
in der Öffentlichkeit Gehör fanden.

10 Years of Identifying Risks and
Protecting Health
The BfR began its work as a new institute within the portfolio
of the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer
Protection in Berlin in November 2002. Together with the Fed-
eral Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety, which
had also been newly established, it was the federal govern-
ment's answer to the intention of the European Commission
to restructure consumer health protection in Europe as a
result of several food crises. The BfR celebrated its tenth an-
niversary in 2012. It can look back on several thousands of
scientific opinions on subjects related to the safety of food,
chemicals and consumer products which were heard by
politics, scientists, industry, media and the general public.
