Feed Additives
According to the Regulations on Feeds Additives are substances which are mixed to feed in order to achieve various goals.
A first group of feed additives serves to prevent deficiency symptoms in food-producing animals or to obtain better yield (e.g. higher milk yield, higher egg production, faster meat gain and, by extension, shorter fattening time). This group of feed additives includes
- vitamins,
- minerals and trace elements,
- performance-enhancing agents.
A second group of feed additives serves to improve the properties of feeds. It includes:
- preservatives,
- dyes,
- excipients like flowing agents or emulsifiers etc.
A third group consists of
- coccidiostatic agents (substances which prevent infections with Coccidia -protozoans)
BfR assesses the safety of feed additives for humans and animals. Feed additives are authorised by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture or the European Commission (DG 24).
